MANILA, Philippines - (UPDATE) Students from Ateneo occupied half of the top 10 list of the 2010 Bar Examinations, with one of them being the bar topnotcher, the Supreme Court (SC) announced on Thursday.

Cesareo Antonio Singzon Jr. of the Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) law school in Makati City got the highest score of 89% in the Bar Exams held last year, according to Justice Conchita Carpio Morales.

He bested 982 other bar passers, or 20.26% of all the 4,847 examinees.

Coming in second is Filemon Ray Javier, also from ADMU, who had a score of 86.95%.

Other Ateneo passers include Janette Ancog (4th), Johana Sunga (5th) and William Benson Gan (9th).

The rest of the top 10 barristers came from the University of the Philippines (UP), Arellano University, and University of San Carlos.

All Bar Exam passers, or those who received a grade of 72.5% or higher, are set to take their oath at 10 a.m. on April 14 at the Philippine International Convention Center.

They may secure their clearances from the Office of the Bar Confidant from March 21 to April 13.

New date, new venue

The 2010 bar examinations were held on 4 Sundays of September at the De La Salle University in Taft Avenue, Manila.

This year, however, the SC said the exams will be held in a different month and venue, giving barristers more time for review.

Instead of September, the 2011 Bar Exams will take place at the University of Santo Tomas (UST) in EspaƱa, Manila in November.

On top of these are changes in coverage and format.

Starting this year, the coverage of the Bar Examinations will be drawn up by topics and sub-topics rather than just by stating the covered laws.

It will also be composed of more multiple-choice questions (MCQ), which will take up 60% of an examiner's final score.

Last year's Bar Exams ended in tragedy as a female law student lost both legs and at least 46 others were injured in the explosion. With reports from Ina Reformina, ABS-CBN News
