In what is quite possibly a first for the United States, this week Police in San Francisco’s Bay Area Rapid Transit subway system disabled cell and wireless access to prevent protesters gathering.







While on Thursday the UK Prime Minister David Cameron caused controversy when he said that Police should have the ability to disable social networking access during times of civil unrest.



Both of these actions have caused concern from civil rights groups and mobile operators.



In the United States the Federal Communications Commission, FCC, said it was concerned by the events in San Francisco. Civil rights groups have also attacked the actions; many have complained that what happened was illegal under Californian law, infringed the First Amendment of the U.S Constitution, and also endangered commuters by preventing them from contacting the emergency services.
